Old Vic Artistic Director Matthew Warchus directs the world premiere of new musical Groundhog Day which runs for a strictly limited 10 week season. Based on the hit 1993 comedy which starred Bill Murray, this production is a collaboration between writer Danny Rubin, composer and lyricist Tim Minchin, choreographer Peter Darling and designer Rob Howell.
Phil Connors is a misanthropic, egotistical Pittsburgh TV weatherman who is grudgingly sent to cover the annual Groundhog Day festivities in the isolated Pennsylvanian town of Punxsutawney every year. During his latest visit, his attempts to return home as quickly as possible are thwarted by a blizzard which closes roads and airports and forces him and his colleagues to stay an extra night in Punxsutawney.
Phil wakes up the next morning to find that he is reliving February 2 once again and eventually realises that he is caught in a time loop, forced to repeat the same day over and over again and again…and again. As each day plays out exactly the same as before, Phil decides to take advantage of the situation with no fear of long-term consequences. As he becomes increasingly despondent that this may be his fate for eternity, he wonders if he will ever discover how to break the cycle.
