Show Details
Jonathan Church's critically acclaimed revival of Bertolt Brecht's The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui transfers to the Duchess Theatre for a limited 12 week season following a sell-out run at Chichester Festival Theatre last year. Henry Goodman will reprise the title role of murderous racketeer Arturo.
Written by Brecht in 1941 as a satire on fascism, Arturo Ui is a funny, sharp and menacing parable on the rise of Adolf Hitler shot through with razor-sharp wit.
The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui is set in Chicago in the 1930s during the Great Depression - a time of unemployment, fear and corruption, and the perfect opportunity for a small-time mobster and his henchmen to corner the cauliflower trade and make it big.
Arturo Ui and his mob of gangsters run protection rackets for both workers and businesses in Chicago and neighbouring Cicero. Soon Ui's menacing shadow looms large, from the markets, to the docks and across the city itself, hell-bent on taking over the city's entire fruit and veg trade - whatever the cost...
Please note that this production contains some adult themes and may be unsuitable for children under 12 years old.
