When down-on-his-luck screenwriter Joe Gillis stumbles into the reclusive and fantastical world of faded silent movie star Norma Desmond, she sees an unmissable opportunity to make a triumphant comeback and persuades him to rework a film script she has written for famed director Cecil B. DeMille. In turn, impoverished Joe is seduced by Norma's wealth and her luxurious lifestyle, moving into her decaying Los Angeles mansion at her insistence. But the claustrophobic entanglement between the pair has dramatic and tragic consequences when Joe finally decides to break free.
