Richard Eyre directs the highly anticipated world premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical Stephen Ward, based on the events leading up to the 1963 Profumo Affair, one of the most notorious scandals in British political history.

The musical tells the story of the real victim of the Profumo Affair - not the disgraced MP and Minister for War John Profumo himself, nor even the fatally wounded Conservative government, but Dr Stephen Ward, a fashionable society osteopath and artist whose private libertarian experiments blew up in his own and everyone else's face.

Ward introduced the married Profumo to former model and showgirl Christine Keeler, the reputed mistress of an alleged Soviet spy, at a house party in the summer of 1961. The events that followed rocked the Houses of Parliament and changed the face of British politics forever. Their ensuing affair, followed by Profumo's lying in the House of Commons when he was questioned about it, forced his resignation and damaged the reputation of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan's government.

Although Ward’s role in the Profumo Affair seemed at first to be entirely innocent, there was more to him than met the eye and it soon became clear that he had something to hide. Charged with living off the profits of prostitution, Ward became the targeted scapegoat of a furiously self-righteous Establishment and committed suicide on the last day of the court trial.
